WooCommerce packaging reporting without losing the audit trail

A useful packaging report is more than a total number of kilograms. You also need to know which orders, products, packaging versions and shipping materials created that total.

What should a WooCommerce packaging record contain?

At minimum, a reproducible record connects an order to the packaging attached to each sold product and to the packaging used for shipment. Material categories can include paper/cardboard, plastic, glass, aluminium, ferrous metal, wood and other materials.

For reporting, it is useful to retain the country, order date, material, weight, source and the packaging version that was valid when the order was processed.

Why current product data is not enough

Packaging changes. A supplier may reduce a carton from 32 g to 27 g, or you may switch from a box to a mailer. If a report simply reads today’s product fields, old orders can silently change when master data is edited.

Core principle: historical orders should remain explainable with the packaging assumptions that applied at the time.

A practical order-level calculation

Suppose an order contains two units of a product with 18 g of cardboard and 6 g of plastic packaging per unit, and it ships in a 92 g cardboard box.

Cardboard: (2 × 18 g) + 92 g = 128 g Plastic: (2 × 6 g) = 12 g

The useful part is not only the 128 g and 12 g result. It is being able to show where those figures came from later.

How PackVerity approaches it

PackVerity stores versioned product packaging, shipping profiles and order snapshots. When relevant WooCommerce orders are processed, material entries are written to an append-only ledger. Corrections and eligible refunds are recorded as new entries rather than by erasing prior history.

You can then filter records by country and year and export either detailed audit data or a compact summary CSV.

What PackVerity does not do

PackVerity is not an automatic legal-compliance or filing service. Producer responsibility, thresholds, legal classifications and statutory submissions remain your responsibility. PackVerity is designed to make the underlying WooCommerce packaging records more structured and traceable.
